Ancient history.

We were able to source a handful of these coins from the Middle East. Each necklace holds a small coin called a Lepton, minted by King Jannaeus in Judea between the years 103 to 76BC. These crudely hand struck little bronze coins stayed in circulation in the Holy Land right up until the 4th century AD. You can still see an eight pointed star representing the king on one side and an anchor on the back. The text is Greek on one side and Hebrew on the other. These were the lowest value coin at the time which makes them the most likely to be the 'widow's mite' mentioned in the bible.

Found in the New Testament Gospels of Luke and Mark, there is a well known parable in the Bible known as “lessons of the widow’s mite”. It is about a poor widow who gave two small coins in a church’s offering, while people with more money around her made much larger donations.

The coin is set in an individually hand made 9ct gold mount and hung on a oxidised (blackened) silver 2 belcher chain. The coin is approximately 8mm in diameter. The chain is 16”-18" in length.

A unique gift for those of faith or with an interest in the ancient world.
